Sometimes, pocket diapers such as Bumgenius and Fuzzibunz are sold with their microfiber inserts. And sometimes, some pockets are sold without. Or you’re shopping on Spots or a message board FSOT and the inserts aren’t included. Don’t fear! You can easily make your own from materials you can easily find around the house or buy for very cheap.

Perhaps the easiest inserts are prefold diapers. Take a small sized prefold, preferably the higher quality variety you can find online, fold it into thirds and voila! You’ve got instant insert that is super absorbant.

If you like microfiber, just pick up some cheap microfiber towels at Walmart or Target in the automotive section. You can get a whole stack for a few bucks. Either just fold those into thirds and stuff them into the pocket, or do what I did. I’m not a sewer by any means, but even I was able to fold the towels into thirds and sew across each end. That leaves the middle unsewed so it’s easier to clean and dry but keeps it’s “shape” so you don’t have to fold every time you’re folding diaper laundry.

You can also find some fabrics in the stores or online, such as flannel (or use old baby blankets from around the house!), bamboo fabrics, hemp or whatever you prefer. You can sew them up easily into inserts or just fold them and stuff. Even old bath towels that are bound for the scrap pile can make great inserts!

This also works if you’re looking for some extra stuffin’s to pack a pocket for night time.

You can even mix and match your inserts. I will often take a homemade microfiber insert and wrap a prefold around it for a super-duper absorbent insert. Haven’t had a leak yet!

When it comes to pocket inserts, don’t be afraid to think outside the box and use whatever is handy. Experiment and find the perfect homemade combination that works for you!

My post the other day about Diaper Swappers has sure gotten a lot of attention! I was out of town, watching the comments flow in on my iPhone email client and marveling at the discussion. There is definitely some heated opinions out there about Diaper Swappers.

But first, let me apologize. I knew these heated opinions and I didn’t share them with you in my post. So I apologize for that! Someone had emailed me asking me how to figure out how to sell on Diaper Swappers so my post was answering that, without going into some of the nitty gritty details.

There have been many people who have come forward saying that Diaper Swappers (or more specifically, their ads) have given people’s computers dangerous and destructive viruses. I have not experienced this myself and that could be why I didn’t think to mention it. I use a Mac, Firefox and the powerful AdBlock Plus extension. This means that all ads on all sites are automatically blocked. Even when I visited DS on my old, decrepit Dell with expired and useless virus protection, using Firefox with AdBlock Plus meant that I never once had a virus problem. Phew! But that doesn’t mean that this virus issue isn’t a very real problem for many people. So I would advise those of you who go to Diaper Swappers or want to check it out, to make sure you understand there is a risk and to take the proper precautions. Back up your important files, save your precious photos to an external hard drive and beware!

Of course, the issues with Diaper Swappers don’t end with the viruses. There are also lots of opportunities to get “scammed”. Again, this is nothing that has happened to me, thank goodness, but it DOES happen unfortunately. And some people are of the belief that DS makes it easy for people to get spammed. This is because of the “no bashing and no drama” rules, you aren’t allowed to call out someone who has scammed you on the board or even in private messages in an effort to warn others. There are stories I have heard where these issues have been handled satisfactorily behind the scenes, and stories I’ve heard where dozens of people have been burnt. It’s much like eBay in that you need to heed the “buyer beware” warning and use your best judgment. There are ways to protect yourself when selling and buying and you would be on that.

Other cloth diapering communities can also be plagued by scammers, but the argument is that on those boards, you are able to call out the foul party. Of course, it’s always possible that someone could be wrongly targeted.

There are other places besides Diaper Swappers to sell your used diapers and to hang out and make friends. Many of the commenters in my last post have championed Cloth Diaper Nation. I have yet to check out this site, but have heard many good things. There is also the forums at the Diaper Pin. There are great cloth diapering communities on Live Journal as well. Hyena Cart’s Spots Corner is my personal favorite place to sell things because there seems to be less hassle. If you’re into the fitted diaper craze, there’s even the forum at the Goodmama site, though I’ve heard it can be just as troublesome as Diaper Swappers. There are also countless of smaller, more personal communities. I belong to such a forum, a group that had formed on Diaper Swappers before branching out on our own. Sometimes we sell to one another and sometimes we just hang out and chat. I love these smaller communities because they give you a great opportunity to fit in somewhere and really get to know people.

My big question to all of you now is: What is your favorite cloth diapering community and why? Tell us in the comments, share your favorite sites and why you keep coming back. I’d love to hear from all of you!

So you have decided to cloth diaper your child and you’ve heard a lot about a site called “Diaper Swappers”. Your travels through the cloth diapering community have, more than likely, lead you there more than once. And, frankly, to a “newbie”, Diaper Swappers can be large and intimidating. How do you get started there? How do you buy and sell diapers on the FSOT (For Sale or Trade) forums? Are there any unspoken rules be aware of? What about spoken rules?

Here’s a small and by no means complete primer on the world of Diaper Swappers, so you don’t need to feel intimidated.

First thing to keep in mind when it comes to selling and buying diapers is it helps to not come across as too “new”. This means, you should get at least 10 posts under your belt. Getting ten posts is EASY. Find the “Extra Fluffy” or the Q&A forums and contribute to the conversation and chatter. Once you have ten posts, not only do you not look painfully new, but you are able to post pictures and links, something very helpful if you are trying to sell some of your stash.

Another thing to remember if you’re wanting to buy, sell and trade is FEEDBACK. Do you have any on Diaper Swappers? If not, in your listing (if you’re selling) or in your PM (if you’re buying), perhaps provide links to feedback you might have on other forums or on eBay or Hyena Cart. Also: it’s easier to get feedback as a “newbie” by buying versus selling. Once you have a few positive feedbacks as a buyer under your belt, you’re a lot more likely to be taken seriously as a seller. The bottom line is: people want to make sure you aren’t going to “scam” them, take their money and run. Feedback is a good assurance that you’re good for your word.

This next tip may seem inconsequential, but it can really count for a lot. Update your signature and avatar on Diaper Swappers. People tend to feel a lot more comfortable around those who have “established” themselves in the community and committed to it as well. A good way to show this commitment is to put a little picture in your avatar (maybe of you or your kids? or your favorite diaper or piece of wool?) and a few lines in your signature about you and your family. It’s an easy and recognizable way to share with people who you are. If you leave these two areas blank, you come across as someone who is just passing through, either to scam or to make a quick buck. And those sorts are generally avoided, if at all possible.

When trying to sell, you have to pay close attention to your listing. Make the title of your post descriptive of what you’re selling (and be sure to put it in the proper forum… don’t try to sell pocket diapers in the fitted diaper forum!). Describe the items you’re selling as thoroughly as you can, and be sure to mention any stains or issues. This isn’t the time to gloss problems over. Put up pictures! A lot of people try to avoid pictures, or even link to their Photobucket accounts. You get a LOT more response when you actually post the pictures in the thread. And if you’re uploading to Photobucket, it’s SUPER easy to copy over the image links to Diaper Swappers. There’s no excuse not to! Get good pictures of the outside of the item (and the inside too if it’s a diaper) so people can see what it looks like. Use pictures that are at least 400 pixels wide. Smaller than that and people can’t see the details as well! Also: PRICING. I know it’s tempting sometimes to try to get the most $ for your used items. But if you paid $35 for a diaper and used it three times a week for the last year, do not expect to get over $20 for it. People like to shop FSOT in hopes of getting good deals. You’re going to get better response if you offer a good deal. Cloth diapers are GREAT for getting money back when it comes time to sell, but keep in mind you are selling something USED and price accordingly! Look around on the forum where you are hoping to sell and see what similar items are being listed at. That should give you a good idea of how to price your stuff!

Most of all, be courteous and respond to PMs right away and BE HONEST. Before long you’ll be an old pro!

Is it cooling off where you live? It sure isn’t cool here… or at least not as cool as I’d like it! But thoughts are already turned towards fall and winter and the cloth diapering world is not immune!

Since I started knitting last year, and since I’ve “gone into business”, so to speak, work has been steady. There hasn’t been a time that there hasn’t been ANYTHING that I could knit. During the spring and summer, it was all capris, board shorts, shorties, soakers and skirties. But now? Even with the weather still so warm outside, people are after longies!

Everyone is looking to build their winter stash of wool and if you don’t look early, the best slots fill up by September. While I wouldn’t consider myself one of the best knitters out there, I too am full up. In fact, I worry that I’ll have any time to knit some longies for my own daughter! I’m positively swimming in yarn and I’m knitting every spare chance I get!

I can generally crank out a simple pair of medium/large longies in about 3 or 4 days. Maybe more, maybe less. It’s fairly rare lately that I’m only working on one thing at a time. In addition to getting busy, I’ve gotten quick too!

Still, like I said, I worry I’ll have enough time to knit for Evie. If I had been on the ball, I would have nailed down a knitter a couple weeks ago to knit for me. Yes, it’s more common than you think! Knitters often have to send off yarn to other knitters in order to get woolies for their little ones done!

The rush isn’t just limited to wool though. Everyone is looking for diapers to round out their stashes, trainers for their children that are of potty training age, shirts and swing tops to go with all those cute pants! The next several months look to be busy and exciting in the cloth diaper community. Keep your eyes out at Diaper Swappers and Hyena Cart for great deals and cuteness galore. And make sure you’ve got some PayPal saved up too!

We recently got back from a trip that took us far from home for over a week. We were staying in several different locations, none of them with terribly easy (or cheap!) laundry access and not a lot of extra time to spare. We went to Disney World, clear across the country, and then on the Disney Cruise, out at sea. We knew that our cloth diapers wouldn’t be a good solution for us on this trip. It was going to be stressful enough trying to manage two toddlers far from home without having to worry about misplacing a beloved fitted diaper or fighting stains.

We purchased a package of disposables that would fit both children and the day before the trip, I did one last load of diaper laundry and then put the kids in ’sposies (as they’re so affectionately referred to in the cloth diapering community). On the plane the next day (and oh boy, we were on the plane for a loooooong time!), I noticed a smell. I wondered if it was my older son, who these days has an odor all his own. I had recently changed my daughter and surely it couldn’t be her. Maybe it was just the smell of the plane.

The next day, amidst our fun in the Magic Kingdom, I noticed the smell again. I noticed it whenever I picked up my son or daughter from their strollers or when I held them in my lap. It was… the disposable diapers. They SMELLED.

Whenever so much as drop of urine would hit that diaper, the smell would start and it was awful. I don’t know what to compare it to, other than to say that it made me think of a gas station bathroom.

I’d always heard people in the cloth diapering community say that disposables stink and I always thought they were a little nuts. After all, I used disposables on my oldest and used them for two years on my middle child. I never noticed any smell! And if they smelled as bad as people said, I would have noticed that, surely?

Apparently not.

I’m not sure what causes the stink, but my best guess is there are chemicals in the absorption gel in the disposable diapers that react and cause an odor.

I got used to the smell, best as I could, over the next week. But I was so happy to get home and put one of my daughter’s fitted diapers on her again. And my son ran to the changing table and picked out a pocket diaper, insisting I put it on him. I think he missed his cloth too!

The disposables were great as far as convenience went. After all, that is why they were first made, right? So that people would have a simple option when out of the house or traveling. They served their purpose. But I have not been sad to shelve the diapers we had leftover and doubt we’ll touch them until we next go on a vacation like this. And if we don’t go on another vacation where we need to use disposables? We’ll donate them. They’re not that great for everyday use, believe you me.

Has anyone else besides me noticed the ’sposie stink while on vacation? Isn’t it just AWFUL?

I’ve been rather dissatisfied with my laundry detergent lately. I started out using Purex Free and Clear and that was fine, if unremarkable. I tried regular Tide for a while before I switched to the “Seven Signs” Tide (the one in the orange bottle). And that worked fine too. But lately I’ve grown frustrated with stains. I don’t have stink problems, I have STAIN problems. Something is going on with my little ones, Evie mostly, and she is a little poop MACHINE these days. It must be teething. She went from pooping every two days or so to going several times a day, sometimes as often as every couple of hours! Oh the stains!

I know that sunning works wonders but we lack a decent clothesline out in our backyard and with the way the winds pick up in the afternoon around here, diapers have a way of blowing halfway around my yard if I’m not careful. Sunning, for now, is a last resort. I’d love it if I could have a detergent that gets me halfway there and is great at removing stains.

There are things you can do before you even toss a dirty diaper in the pail to help combat stains. For one, using liners helps a LOT. I have a pile of strips of fleece I’ve cut that I lay on top of the fitted soakers. Most of the mess ends up on the fleece (where it easily washes off) and less on the diaper. Another step is to spray the diaper off in the toilet. I admit to being a little lazy about doing this. Sometimes I do, and sometimes I don’t. But spraying off the bulk of the “mess” does wonders. It saturates the diaper so that messes don’t dry onto the fabrics and it removes a good majority of the mess at the same time. Another thing you can do is spray the diaper with Bac-Out or another stain fighting yet diaper solution (a simple search on Diaper Swappers yields a bevy of personal recipes for such things!). This is one thing I would really like to try and will as soon as I have time to sit down and look at my options!

Still… I’ve heard wonderful things about homemade laundry detergents. Looking around on Hyena Cart, you can find dozens of shops that sell homemade detergents to solve all your laundry woes. And a lot of these detergents are not only safe for diapers, but recommended! I’ve put off trying some for a long time, thinking there’s no way they could work as well as my Tide.

I’ve received some samples of WAHM made detergents in several of my orders lately so this last week I tried a few. And.. I’m pretty impressed! Impressed enough that I looked into the different detergents to see if there was one that was recommended above others. I found a great one on Diaper Swappers that comes highly recommended. Her shop there is called “Earthy Products”. I put an order in last week for detergent, pail deodorizer (something we DESPERATELY need these days!) and a dryer sachet that will safely and pleasantly scent the diapers while in the dryer. I’ve heard great things about her products and I can’t wait to try them out! I will be sure to give a good run down here on my experience.

When I first started using cloth diapers when my daughter was 8 weeks old, I thought I would have hard time sticking with it. I thought I might be tempted to wimp out from time to time and use disposables. After all, I had raised my oldest on nothing but disposable diapers and had been using disposables on my younger son for nearly two years. My habits were firmly set. And anyone who knows me, knows that I have a hard time breaking habits. Especially when breaking those habits might mean more work for me.

A common excuse I hear when talking to people about cloth diapers is “I don’t have time!” I say excuse, because it’s just that. And it also is mildly insulting because does this mean I do nothing but sit around and eat bon bons all day long? I have oodles of time so that must be why I use cloth diapers. Whatever. I would ask then how it is that I know so many women who work full time and yet also cloth diaper their children. Are they not busy? The only conclusion to be drawn is that: cloth diapers don’t take a lot of time. They don’t! They don’t even add a lot of chaos to the routine. It’s hard to swallow because it goes against everything we’ve pretty much been raised to believe about cloth diapering. In all honesty (and I do consider myself to be something of an expert on the issue since I have spent a good deal of time using both disposables AND cloth), cloth diapering does not add time or frustration to diapering. Not. At. All. Diaper changes don’t have to take any longer unless you want them to. Diaper laundry is as simple as dumping a load in the machine and turning it on. That takes, what, two minutes? Some people don’t even fold diapers as they come out of the wash. They’ll simply put the laundry basket full of clean diapers near their changing station and grab from there. Me, I’m a little disturbed and I actually don’t mind folding diapers and getting them ready to stack neatly on the changing table. It’s therapeutic and something I do while watching television. Gee, much like how people fold regular laundry while watching TV.

Another excuse is from women who work and send their children to day care. I can understand the hesitation here. But MANY day cares DO allow cloth diapers these days! A general rule of thumb with day care centers is you bring your own wetbag and the diapers needed. Generally, the bigger centers dont’ care to fiddle with fitteds or prefolds and wool, so this is where you use pockets and all in ones. The day care provider tosses the soiled diaper, yes poop and all, in the wet bag. You deal with it when you get home. And it’s not all that bad. If the diaper has been rolled up, it can be easy to dump solids in the wet bag or spray them off without getting too messy in the meantime. Some day care centers do not allow cloth for “health reasons”, this is true. So it pays to do a little research. I know a gal who provides day care out of her home, and she cloth diapers her own children. Not only that, but she cloth diapers her day care children as well! Regardless if the parents use cloth or not! She has extra diapers in her stash to account for numbers and from her account, doesn’t bother in the least. And think of how many less diapers going into the landfills that is! This woman deserves a medal.

It’s always easy to find excuses not to cloth diaper. But at the end of the day, it comes down to motivation. If you want to, you make it work. If you don’t, then you don’t. Simple enough. That said, I do respect people’s choices and decisions for their families. And at the same time, hope the same courtesy to be extended towards me. If I don’t assume you’re an earth-hating person, then don’t assume that my diapers are “gross”, okay? Deal!

In lieu of having something else to talk about (I’m still kicking around my nighttime diaper post… it’s coming!), I wanted to do a Dave Letterman-style top ten list of why I love cloth diapering. Surely, I have more than ten reasons, but these are a few notable notions.

10. It’s good for the environment. Naysayers will try to bring up the whole electricity/gas/water thing when it comes to washing the diapers. But when you take into account the resources, gas, chemicals etc that go into make disposables, just to have the end result end up in a landfill for 500 years? NO CONTEST. Not even a WASH. Cloth diapers FTW! (that’s “for the win” to the rest of y’all)

9. It saves money. Sorta. If you really want to and need to save money? You can do it EASY with cloth diapers. Now, the avenue I’ve chosen with the fancy fitteds is probably not as cost efficient as I could be. And if this were my first child instead of my last, I’m sure the savings would add up quick. Still, I imagine I’ll come out ahead in the end after I’ve sold the diapers post-potty-training.

8. They’re darned cute. It’s a lot of fun to get into different fabric prints and styles and such.

7. They’re a gateway to other handmade goodies. I wouldn’t have been exposed to the wonders of shippers (shoes and slippers in one, yo!), swing dresses, Kahootz and other wonderful items were it not for cloth diapering.

6. WOOL! Cloth diapering opened my eyes to wool pants and from there to knitting myself. I love to knit! I knit ALL the time! I never would have even thought of it if it weren’t for the diapers. And that’s the truth.

5. They’re leak proof! If you use them right and know what styles work best with your kid, then it’s possible to NEVER experience a leak with cloth diapers. I can’t remember the last time we had any sort of leak. Try THAT with disposables!

4. The kids love them! As mine are both getting older, they enjoy picking out their own diapers and even have favorites! It becomes a fashion accessory, if you will. A precursor to special underwear too!

3. They make changing time FUN. Yes, you heard me. Changing diapers is rarely fun, I know. And the really messy ones are never a blast and a half. But cute cloth diapers do make diaper changes a lot more interesting. I’ve actually come to enjoy diaper changing. It provides a great bonding moment for me and the kids.

2. I hear tell that cloth diapering eases the transition through potty training. I’m too skeered to try this myself, but I’m counting on it to be true!

and last but not least….

1. It has introduced me to a wonderful community of women who love to talk about cloth diapers, wool, crafts and LIFE. I love finding a new group of people to share my life with and I need the interaction too!

So if you cloth diaper, what are your favorite parts? Do share!

It’s no secret that snappiable fitteds are my new love. For those who aren’t in the know, snappiable fitteds are diapers that are one-size fitteds that do not have snaps to close them. You either use a Snappi or pins to close the diaper. This allows you to get a much better fit on your baby and I believe helps the diaper fit your baby longer too!

In this exercise, I’m comparing BSRB (Bagshot Row Bamboo) Ultimate Fit, scuttlebutts one-size snappiable fitteds, and Sticky Peas’ NRSS (No Roll Simply Sticky). There are many others out there, but these three are generally considered the leaders of the pack and are a good representation of what options are out there since all three have different doubler systems. And I thought it would be very helpful to show pictures of all these diapers (and even a comparison against a Goodmama fitted diaper for reference’s sake) side by side and a couple of action shots as well. I want to send out big thanks to Sara of Twee Baby for letting me use her pics. This saved me a lot of time and angst and since her pictures were great to begin with, why not use them? Sara, you (and your woolies!) rock!

First, each diaper’s description from their website (minus Goodmama, since I’m going to assume you know all about them already):

NRSS:

What does NRSS stand for? “No Roll Simply Sticky”. I converted my prefolds into prefitted style diapers. For a lot of babies these will be one size diapers. Mamas have been able to have their little ones use these from as small as 10lbs and up. They have a 18″ rise and the waist and thighs are flexible just as a prefold would be.

There are two different types of NRSS’s.

1) NRSS full panel has 3 layers:

Outer Layer: Decorative Knit

Middle Layer: Organic Bamboo Terry

Inside Layer: Organic Bamboo Velour and/or Cotton Velour

Soaker: Zorb in between 2 layers of Organic Bamboo French Terry topped with a layer of OBV or CV. A second soaker made of two layers of OBCF is attached to the back of the main soaker. Wool backed fleece doubler is included so that you can adjust the absorbency to fit your baby’s needs.

Sizes:

Newborn: coming soon
Regular: 18” rise
X-Large: 19.5” rise, longer wings.

BSRB:

As with each of my other fitteds, the Bagshot Row Bamboo Ultimate Fit is fully adjustable by folding down the rise, which is 18″ at it’s highest.

It is constructed from two absorbent layers of bamboo/organic cotton fleece with an outer layer of boutique cotton knit that is perfect for use with a snappi or pins. The difference, however is in the wings and the new doubler system.

The Bagshot Row Bamboo Ultimate Fit has more narrow front and back wings, so there is no need to fold them to prevent wing droop on older babies! Just lay the fitted beneath your little one, adjust the rise according to your needs, snappi/pin and you’re done!

The new doublers system is perfect for those who require lots of absorbency, but want to cut down on the bulk.

Each Ultimate Fit includes:

Not one, but TWO full sized two layer bamboo/organic cotton fleece doublers that have been serged together in a quick dry style for your convenience.

The snap is now hidden between the layers of these two doublers for your baby’s added comfort. The full sized doublers are generous enough in length to allow for folding in half or even into thirds for maximum absorbency!

If that is not enough bamboo for you, an extra two layer bamboo/organic cotton contoured doubler is also included so you can place it where you need the most extra absorbency!

When each of the full sized doublers are folded in half, your fitted will provide you with a total of 12 layers of amazingly soft and absorbent bamboo!

You would think that a fitted with that much absorbency would be bulky, but not this fitted.

Why sacrifice the absorbency that you need most for a trim fit, when you can have both?

Luxurious and absorbent organic bamboo + a trim and trendy design = The Bagshot Row Bamboo Ultimate Fit!

scuttlebutts:

Diaper Features:

* A gorgeous hand-made, turned & top stitched snappiable, pinnable fitted.

* Diaper body is made of:

Outer: Cotton Knit printed fabric
Hidden Core: Organic Bamboo Fleece
Inner Layer: Organic Bamboo Fleece or Organice Bamboo Velour or Cotton Velour (she does all three!)

* Snap in tri-fold soaker is one layer of bamboo fleece & one layer of cotton velour for a total of 9 thirsty layers when folded in place.
* New! Now includes a matching 3 layer doubler.
* Soaker unfolds in the wash ensuring easy & complete cleansing as well as super quick drying time. Embellished with the signature scuttlebutts heart on the underside.
* No confusing snaps or messy velcro.
* Diaper can be pinned, snappied, or just held in place by a snug cover.
* This diaper is s-t-r-e-t-c-h-y with long wings so it’s easy to get a nice, snug & totally customizable fit whether baby is 8 lbs or 28 lbs, a skinny minny or a chub-a-wub!
* Elasticized legs and back help contain messes
* Absorbent!
* Since these fit until at least 35ish lbs (and quite possibly longer) there’s no need for constant sizing up; these easily fit from birth to about 24 months which means less money spent on new diapers.

Easy, uncomplicated, user friendly, earth friendly, plus luxuriously soft and fabulously fashionable! This diaper is no doubt going to create a scuttlebutt at your next play date!

* Each order will come with usage instructions including washing tips. I also cloth diaper my kiddos so if you’re having a problem, chances are I’ve been there & can offer some advice. You’re always welcome to email me with questions. I love talking cloth!
* This is a fitted diaper, which requires a cover.
* Hand made in a smoke-free, dog friendly home.

Here are all four: Goodmama, NRSS, BSRB and Scuttlebutts, side by side:

As you can see, they’re all similar but have subtle differences. They are all turned and topstitched, unlike the Goodmama on the far left, which prevents any chafing and rashes your baby may get from the serged edges. And, as I mentioned before, they all lack snaps. This is a good thing because not only can you get a better fit with a Snappi, your baby isn’t going to have any reaction to exposed snaps against their skin (my daughter has and it’s not pretty!). The scuttlebutts and the NRSS both have a longer rise than the BSRB and the GM.

Here they are on the inside:

Here is where the differences really show! The GM has an OBV inner (some of their fitteds now have cotton velour inners as well) and a snap in soaker with two “petals”, each backed with organic bamboo fleece. The NRSS (next on the right) also has a snap in soaker with “petals”. Their inner is also composed of OBV, but the organic bamboo terry on the soaker is turned “smooth” side out and there is a material called “Zorb” sandwiched in between. Included is a organic bamboo fleece doubler to go between the petals that is backed with wool interlock. The BSRB is all organic bamboo fleece inside, turned smooth side out. The soaker snaps in via 1 snap and is long and thin (often referred to as a “snake” soaker) with two strips. The advantage here is that you can fold these strips however you see fit and to match your baby’s absorbancy needs. A OBF doubler that is contoured in shape is included for you to use where you see fit. Lastly, on the right, we have the scuttlebutts. The inner can be either OBV, OBV or cotton velour. The soaker here is a “trifold” soaker that snaps into the back with two snaps. You fold it into thirds and place the doubler where you see fit (I usually tuck it inside the soaker). The soaker is topped with whichever inner fabric is used and backed with OBF.

In my experience, the least effective is the Goodmama diaper. The OBV is very soft and silky and it is very absorbent. But the OBV loses it’s silkiness after a while and though the diaper has considerable bulk from all of it’s layers, it is often hard to contain leaks through the wetzone with this diaper. With a cover on, it isn’t a problem. But when going coverless as we often do at home, it would be nicer if they “lasted” bit longer. The other three work incredibly well with perhaps the edge going to the BSRB. The ability to fold the soaker so you have the absorption where you need it the most is extremly effective. I don’t think my daughter has leaked out of a BSRB yet! And their nighttime diaper (which is a whole ‘nother post unto itself!) is so unbelievably thirsty that after a 10 hour night, my daughter has yet to leak through all the layers of soaker. Yes, I check! All three diapers work very well at containing mess and leaks though and are definitely nap-worthy in this house! The back elastic on the BSRB leaves a little to be desired as I could see explosive newborn poo’s perhaps escaping it’s confines, but the rest have very tight back elastic that will contain just about anything that comes it’s way. I love the wool backed doubler on the NRSS and the whole soaker just feels very well made and of high quality. On the scuttlebutts, I love the print backed doubler and the little heart detail she sews to the inside of each of her soakers.

On the baby, each snappiable fitted diaper is super trim! Here is a Goodmama on the bum:

Adorable, yes, but a little bulky on the bum.

Here is a BSRB on the bum:

Much trimmer!

And the scuttlebutts:

Also very trim!

I don’t have an action shot for the NRSS but I can assure you that it is very similar to the scuttlebutts. A little more bulk in the back from the soaker but not as much as the GM.

I hope this gives you a good idea of what to expect from these diapers. If I had to pick a favorite, I would say scuttlebutts. It’s the perfect combination of cute design, lovely WAHM, great customer service, affordability and effectiveness. Then again, I also simply adore Joyce and BSRB. I can guarantee if you try one of these diapers you won’t be disappointed. If you’ve been turned off by snaps and serging on fitted diapers before, then look no further. These diapers are the answer!
